Advancing Community-Based Anemia Care, through the Sehat Saathi Initiative
In February 2026, Bahaar Foundation launched the “Anemia Mukht Kunkuri” project in Jashpur, Chattisgarh with 51 Community Anemia Advocates (CAAs) or the Sehat Saathis focusing on Anemia. Designed in close collaboration with the CMHO, Jashpur and multiple stakeholders of the public health system, the initiative focuses on strengthening anemia testing, treatment, and follow-up at the community level. As a structured evidence-building effort, the pilot aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of community-based anemia management in addressing one of India’s most persistent public health challenges.
The program formally commenced on 27th February with the foundational anaemia training of our Sehat Saathis. The training covered the fundamentals of anemia, hemoglobin testing, identification of underlying issues, treatment support, the importance of counselling and behaviour change activities — laying a strong foundation for the journey ahead. The Saathis reflected on their own experiences with anemia within their families and communities, and together we strengthened our interpersonal communication (IPC) approach to ensure meaningful engagement with households. Through interactive sessions and role plays grounded in real-life scenarios, they explored how to counsel families, navigate referrals, and build trust while ensuring timely testing and treatment.
The response to the launch and training has been deeply encouraging, underscoring both the urgency of addressing anemia and the community’s readiness to embrace locally anchored, women-led health solutions. It reflects a strong demand for accessible, accountable, and community-based approaches to public health.
